Happy, Healthy Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is quickly approaching. The holiday season can be a time for many of us to overindulge and can be stressful and busy. Staying healthy during the holidays is important. Although indulging in the treats and family meals is certainly ok and expected, making healthier choices throughout the holiday season can help you enter the new year (and your resolutions!). Here are a few tips for a healthy Thanksgiving day.

  • Have breakfast! Although you may be “saving” up the calories for the big meal, it usually will backfire. Start off the day with a healthy breakfast such as an egg-white omelet with veggies or hot whole-grain oatmeal with fruit. Starting off the day with a healthy meal will kickstart your metabolism and help you avoid overeating during the large meal.
  • Bring a healthy dish to share! To ensure you have a healthy option to eat, bring a side dish to share. Ask your host (if not you) what will be served. Opt for a fresh veggie dish or salad.
  • Sip on water.Alcohol may be involved in your meal, plan out a strategy for your drinking. Make sure to alternate alcoholic drinks with water, or choose sparkling water instead of a glass of wine.
  • Fill up on veggies.Your plate should be half vegetables and a quarter of healthy protein (turkey) as well. Healthy starches should make up the rest of your plate.
  • Stay active.Keep up your physical activity. Take an early morning walk or plan some outdoor family fun.

We wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving!
