Massage Beneficial For Oncology Care

Recent studies have shown that massage therapy can help those suffering from cancer. Regular massage can help reduce pain, stress, nausea and other symptoms to improve quality of life. Sadly, one in three patients suffering from Cancer suffers from illness or treatment related pain. It could be caused by chemotherapy, radiation, surgery or a symptom of the illness itself.

Studies have shown that massage therapy significantly reduced pain. “Integrating massage therapy into treatment plans has been shown to greatly reduce cancer-related pain,” said Jeff Smoot, President of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA). “Relieving part of the physical manifestation of disease allows patients to more closely focus on their rehabilitation and recovery.”*

A few of the additional benefits of massage therapy include:

  • Stress reduction
  • Increased relaxation
  • Increased quality of life
  • Improved pain
  • Improved sleep quality
  • Decreased inflammation and swelling
  • Improved circulation
  • Improved soreness and muscle aches

For massage patients suffering from Cancer, it is important to tell your massage therapist as much information as possible to help them best serve you. Medications, symptoms, chemotherapy and surgery are all important areas to inform your massage therapist about. If there are any restrictions your physician has put on you that is also important.

Comfort is key for your massage session. A lighter touch will be used and tumor sites, lymph nodes and any areas of radiation will be avoided. Make sure to constantly communicate with your massage therapist, letting them know if a touch is too hard or soft.

For those that are Cancer survivors, massage should be continued for a higher quality of life, decreased stress and anxiety, pain management and improved sleep habits.

We recommend speaking with your oncologist before beginning massage therapy treatment. If you have had surgery or are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation there may be a few risks for you. If you have questions whether massage therapy can be a great complementary treatment option for you, contact us today.
